I had recorded the Third Strike OST on minidisc (!) and listened to it almost daily on my commute to work. Still consider it one of the best OST’s ever.
The idea that people were mad that a new game didn’t have all the same characters seems strange, but I guess a lot of other fighters have just added a couple new guys into the old ones.
This was great, Japanese style electronica-type music that you wouldn’t really expect to find on a real music CD, and games give you a chance to mash a bunch of different styles together.
Eh, to be fair, it’s kind of hard to call any sequel that ditches all the fan favourites that the legacy was built on a true continuation of the series.
Not to mention that after all those years of getting used to the characters in 2, none of the new characters were really that memorable. Evidentially I was not the only one who thought this way as most of my friends just played Ryu or Ken as they didn’t gravitate to any of the new characters either [Full disclosure, one guy really liked Alex] and the machine itself was gone within a year at my old arcade.
Although I never got the backlash against not having the crumby low polys of the day. I was still playing the Capcom games a tonne back in those days and probably only played MK4 once.
…After which I proceeded to feed the rest of my tokens into X-men vs Street Fighter.
Well i’m sad you are going out but this is going out on top. One overlooked song from 3rd strike is the Theme of Q, just as weird as he is. He was my favorite too!

Can’t wait to give this episode a listen!
